Global Glimpse

Vietnam: Global?  YES!

June 24, 2008

How is Vietnam global one may ask? Throughout the country there are innumerable signs of the nations fast-paced globalization:

The Prime Minister of Vietnam, Nguyen Tan Dung, is currently in Washington D.C. meeting with President Bush to discuss Vietnam’s economic and monetary policies. The Prime Minister hopes to build a stronger relationship with the United States to foster the influx of more American dollars to offset Vietnam’s rampant inflation.

After learning Korean, a young Vietnamese man from a small village north of Hanoi was hired by Hyundai to work in an assembly plant in Seoul, South Korea.

A young Vietnamese woman from the same village is pursuing a position in the service sector in the United Kingdom.

Salvatore Ferragamo, Gucci, Prada, Burberry, Monte Blanc, and Louis Vuitton are just a few of the global brands now appealing to Vietnam’s rising consumerism.

A bottle of wine from Chile is for sale in the mini-bar in our Hanoi hotel room.

A helmet law for scooter and motorbike riders was recently enacted since our last visit here two years ago. The law was ill received by Vietnam’s youth who have an amazing newfound interest in fashion.

Vietnam and China are cooperating to construct a new six-lane highway connecting Kunming, a city in the Yunnan Province of Southern China to Haiphong, a major Vietnamese port city. The new highway will provide a fast route for the shipping of Chinese and Vietnamese manufactured goods abroad.

Thank you for your interest!
